Here in Lauzun, France all we do is go to the local market, eat, relax, and read =( . It is very quiet here. We are staying at my dad's friend's house built in 1830.We are staying here for two weeks. On the left is a picture of the house. Our bedroomss are on the very top floor and there's a marble spiral staircase that goes up there. The only history I know about it is that the old mayor of Lauzun built it and lived here. The statues are called caryatides. A caryatide is a woman statue with no arms. Every morning, we get to sleep in. When we wake up, we have fresh croissants. After we eat, we go to an open market. The markets have anything you could think of. They have fruits, vegetables, spices, meats, fish, sometimes clothes, and when we're lucky -- crepes. Once we stock up on food, we go back to the house and relax by the fire. There is a local lake down the street where mom and Jane do there stretches to "raise their heartbeat". Then they run with straight legs, kicking up all the dried leaves and look like the tuba pla

yers from CAL. Chase and I go fishing at the lake. We've caught one 7 in. catfish. After France, we go to Spain for 2 months. We decided that mom goes early to pick a fun town where we'll live near Seville. She is leaving tomorrow. We will catch up with her in a week and a half. When we found out that she was leaving, we said, "A week and a half?!?!?!" Please leave more comments. From the number of comments we get, it seems like you guys are all dead.

Hello Mary and All,
We're alive and kickin' but without all the juicy stories to share on the homefront. Actually it is a 'pleasant'(as in HOT)86 degrees in Napa today and supposed to stay this way for several more days. The grapes are in, so now we want (and need) rain!
And the farmer's markets are about to end so you know that makes me sad. Aren't the markets there just wonderful? They have everything! I'm glad to see that you are enjoying one of life's delicacies: pure heaven in the form of a French croissant. MMM! And what about the cheese? Double MMM!
So has it been easy to converse with the locals? How many languages do you speak now? I know you learned Polish so you can talk to your husband:)
Life sounds pretty grand so far. Things are good here, but we miss Frankie. We think she had cancer afterall. Otherwise, we're getting ready for Halloween - NOT - and Hawaii on your birthday! What a great way to celebrate!
Thanks for the postcard and all the funny stories you send. We love you and miss you so! XO Karen Jay, Ellie and Emma
Hi Hildies,
I, too, am alive and well and loving the 5 Blest Blogs. I usually don't respond on the blog because I don't think most people would be interested in my tales of teaching and San Quentin. It has been a truly magnificent fall this year...crisp in the early mornings and then warming up by noon. The nights, too, are beautiful with the multitude of stars and the bright moon.
Election day comes soon, a day before the famous Mary H's birthday, and, as you can imagine, people are excited, and all abuzz with conjectures and hopes. I am going to Dave Munoz's to watch the results with a number of good friends from MCDS. Dave, as you may remember, is the poet, pianist, and music collector/historian who works as a custodian at MCDS.
This Saturday, members of the TRUST group at San Quentin are sponsoring a mock election and having as many inmates as possible vote. Two weeks ago they held a Town Hall forum to present the candidates and educate many on their stances and some of the issues we face, such as the economy and disenfranchisement. It is beautiful, I think, to know that men who are not able to vote because of being incarcerated, take such an interest in the issues of our society and want to educate others in the prison as well as their families outside.
Enjoy the lovely world of France and the open markets. I so remember how colorful and delightful they are. xo to all, Mimi
Hi guys!
Thanks for sharing all of the wonderful details of your journey...I am living vicariously through you!! I'm going to pretend that my bagel is a croissant and that the Safeway produce section is an open air market today! I hope I can share the same kind of special experience with my own boys some day....what a gift!
We're busy with school: Ryan in the first grade now and Nick in preschool. We've been to the pumpkin patch on a few fieldtrips. Nick just celebrated his 4th birthday on Tuesday (man it has flown)...he had six little guys over on the weekend for a pirate birthday party. We had a bunch of family over on Tuesday night for cake and ice cream... we were happy to see Michael and Jen! :) We talked a lot about you guys and all of your wonderful stops.... everyone misses you very much!
We are big on Halloween in this house as you can imagine, so we're counting down the days! Happy fall!! We'll check back soon. Sending our love, Kristen, Mike, Ryan and Nick
So...how are you guys doing without Mom?? I suppose she went ahead b/c she speaks Spanish? Well, if you need any "through cyberspace" mothering, I'm always here for you! Remember how much I love each of you. I forget....what grades will you all be in when you get back?? And Jane, are you still planning to go back east to college? There is a wonderful university just 30 miles down the road from here! Hint! Hint! Chase are you listening??? Every kind of outdoor sports are available year around within 30 minutes and our log house right on Deer Lake will be plenty big for getaways with your friends!
Sounds like you guys are having the time of your lives. I love your stories and updates. Aren't the markets the best!! I could live that way!!
We are doing very well...both of us are leading Bible studies and are quite involved in our little church. I'm also helping with the kids' Christmas program and Jon sings in the worship team. Otherwise we have our building projects and go to Whitworth U. for ball games, plays, lectures and music. We also have season tickets to the Coeur d'Alene symphony for which a friend plays violin. Oh, I've been taking monthly water color painting lessons, too.
Time to go to work...then dinner and a movie in town tonight.
Are you all keeping a daily journal? Chase, I remember your lengthy writing when we went to DC.
Blessings to all of you!
Love, Karen (aka Mrs. Robbins)
Hi Guys,
I finally had some extra time to get caught up with your blog. Wow what beauty the Lord has created. I'm sure seeing it with your eyes is much more of a wow factor than in these photos but still it shows His beauty. How blessed are we that He loves us so much to created such beauty! The focus here is on the election...you can imagine....and the economy. I watch the market daily and it gets depressing. I'm waiting for the big "bail out" to help the housing market. Have you heard about the movie Fireproof with Kirk Cameron? I thought the storyline was great but some of the acting was a "B" but it was much better than the Left Behind Series. The production of Inferno is this Wednesday and tomorrow Pastor Gail has planned a Harvest Festival during morning service for the kids. The Link is having a Harvest Festival. I'm not sure if you were still here when The Link started but it's for people ages 18-35 and I think they meet once a month on Friday evening at the church for praise, worship, and fellowship. There is just one more week of Tuesday morning Bible study and then another will start up the first of the year. Remember this time of year how it's just one thing after another? We have missions month with mission speakers coming in and then that wonderful International Missions Banquet, Thanksgiving, Women's Ministries Christmas Party, Christmas, then the first of the year and whew....2009! Unbelievable how time passes. Wednesday evening Pastor has been going through some of the Book of Revelation. It is very, very interesting and it brings so much comfort and reassurance. This life is nothing compared to what God has in store for us in heaven. He is so good to us! Be strong in the Lord. Allow the joy of the Lord to be your strength daily and the peace of the Lord that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and mind. We miss you and love you and pray for you often. Hugs, kisses, and blessings from the Lord. (Philippians 4:4-9 I LOVE this verse!)
Hello again. So this morning in church Pastor was talking about the peace of the Lord and one of the verses was Philippians 4. Ha! I love it when God makes it THAT clear! He loves you! God bless!
Hey Charlie,
Look what happens when you are away; markets plummet, currencies dive, and San Marino looses to South Pasadena on Friday night football. However, it looks like you are your family are enjoying the delicious croissants and cheese. Enjoy a bottle of wine and relax. Looking forward to hearing all the wonderful war stories. Peter Boardman
Hi Miss Mary,
So by now you should be caught up with your mom. Did she pick a fun town? Please catch us all up on your exciting adventures from Spain. :)

Hey Hildeburn Fam-
I've really enjoyed reading how the family is doing and all the (mis)adventures. What an incredible experience you guys are having (as a family, no less!). Charlie, the kitchen blender on the 14th floor hasn't been the same since you left. Did you sabotage it so we couldn't forget about you? And how often are you getting a haircut these days? You had a pretty regular routine...we know you miss the "nice fade, Charlie" comments coming from the all sides of the desk. We miss you, pal.
I think about what you guys are doing a lot and it's truly amazing. It's an inspiration to me as well. The lives you're impacting, the new friendships you're making and people you're touching...god bless and keep you safe.
One last question Chaz: we still on for our Cal vs. SC lunch bet?
Best, Brian H.
Hey All,
Glad I found your blog. What an awesome adventure. I wish I could do it. I went to Europe once while in college and swore I would go back but I never did. I guess I can live vicariously though you guys now!
So Mary, don't mistake the lack of comments for thinking that people have forgotten about you. I don't think a week goes by in history class that I don't get at least one comment about what we are discussing like "That's where Mary is" or "I know Mary just went there" or "Oh Man, I bet Mary's gonna get to see that". You haven't been forgotten. We finished softball and we could have used you. The girls ended up finishing 2-8 (but in a good way). We could just as easily have been 5-5. With another year of experience and you back we'll do better. Basketball is starting this week and I know you'll be missed there too.
For the rest of you Hildeburns, you'll be happy to know that Cal is playing reasonably well this year. (its the only diversion we have from the economic collapse). After beating Oregon on Saturday, we're preparing to take on USC this week with a chance to lead the conference and have a shot for the Rose Bowl. (Translation, the Bears will break our hearts this weekend as usual). I am happy to report that on our way up to the stadium for the first game of the year, we were passed by flatbed trucks carrying away the trees that used to be next to the stadium that have now been cleared for the new training center. At least there's some good news.
Hope you guys have a wonderful rest of your trip. We'll be praying for you.
Mr. E
